Packing and Storage Tips
What to do, and what NOT to do, BEFORE, and During the Self Storage Unit Rental Process
Before Moving Storage
- Purchase packing materials
- Purge and toss anything you really do not want anymore
- Sort through, separate and organize everything you want to keep and store
- Pack the stuff you won't need until after you move
- Pack a separate “emergency” box with things you'll need on the day before and the day of the move.
During The Process of Moving Your Storage
- Remove wheels from everything with wheels
- Disassemble appropriate items
- Tape nuts and bolts to the piece of furniture they go with
- Label boxes with its contents and which room it gets moved to
- Use packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing paper, old towels, etc. when packing fragile items
- Mark boxes with breakables as FRAGILE
- Spread the weight of heavy items over several boxes
- Mark heavy boxes to help avoid injury
- Make sure boxes are completely sealed
- Disconnect appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers
Self Storage Rental Tips
- Place cardboard, pallets or some sort of covering on the storage unit floor
- Shelves that you used for storage at home also work great in a storage unit
- Drawers - store lots of things besides socks and silverware
- Couch cushions make soft places for breakables
- Store long things vertically
- Store glass and mirrors between mattresses
- Place smaller and lighter things on top
- Start at the back of the storage unit and work forward. Try storing odd shaped objects on top of washers, dryers, fridge …. Or towards the front of the unit
- Group like items as much as possible
- Use hand carts…they make the job easier
- Avoid using plastic garbage bags for storage…they can promote mildew
